Over the holidays I took my third crack at Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace (all my posts on DFW) and made it 800 pages. What distinguishes this essay, and most of Wallace's great ones, is not just his argumentative force or illustrative style; he captures the meaning and impact of experiences so well that it inspires readers to think more about their own lives.
